You might say the same thing about the acting of Bill Nighy. Take “Living,” for example, the role that just earned the 73-year-old actor his first Oscar nomination. Set in 1953 London, Nighy plays Mr. Williams, an English gentleman, a bureaucrat, who has settled into a life of routine following the death of his wife. After he receives a terminal diagnosis, he practices breaking the news to his son in front of a mirror. “It’s a bit of a bore, really,” he says with a restraint that has earned him the nickname of Mr. Zombie. Realizing he no longer knows how to enjoy himself, Mr. Williams embarks on a journey to live life fully and do something that has a lasting impact.

“Living,” a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s “Ikiru,” could have been maudlin and dreadful in the wrong hands. Writer Kazuo Ishiguro notes that Nighy’s casting gave him the ability to make Mr. Williams a bit more “frosty,” banking on moviegoers’ affection for the actor. “In England, he’s a national treasure,” Ishiguro says. Costume designer Sandy Powell thought of Nighy after reading the script, not knowing he had already been cast. “We’re used to seeing him more twinkly, aren’t we?” she says. “I think that makes what he does in the film all the more extraordinary.”

Nighy tells me that since “Living” premiered, people mostly want to talk to him about two things — mortality and procrastination. On the first, employing his soft-spoken dry wit, he says he doesn’t worry about death. He just doesn’t want to be around when it happens.

“I’ve never felt any pressure to leave a legacy of any kind,” Nighy says. “I find it difficult to have an enthusiasm for a world that doesn’t include me.” Still, he can’t help but look at the clock. “When you’re my age, you buy a pair of shoes and you think, ‘Wow. How many more pairs of shoes am I going to buy?’ It’s not a morbid thing.” He pauses, reflecting. “I suppose, like everyone else, I feel like I’ll deal with it when I get there.”

That gets us talking about procrastination, which he calls “one of the great corrosive elements of my life.” And yet, he almost takes pride in his ability to put things off, saying he dawdles on an “Olympic level.”

During the height of the pandemic, Nighy spent nearly a year in Suffolk so he could isolate close to his daughter and two granddaughters. He tells me he sat under a willow tree, reading books. Then he corrects himself. “Actually, I sat inside a willow tree,” Nighy says. “The tree came right down to the ground and I had a table and chair inside, just like being in a small chapel. And I read book after book after book.”

Nighy came to appreciate this stretch of relaxation — “I’m good at loafing,” he boasts — and began to look at it as an experiment in retirement. He was happy. He downloaded an app on his phone so he could identify plants. He listened to birds singing and could soon tell the difference between a blackbird and a thrush. The birdsong delighted him. The night sky, filled with stars, satisfied his soul. And Nighy thought: “This is what I’m supposed to be doing. I’m supposed to be sitting under a tree reading ‘Middlemarch.’”

But the pleasure he took in this year of living leisurely was predicated on the knowledge that one day he’d be going back to work, or as he puts it, “cranking up the operation.” Nighy has heard about retirement, and he doesn’t like the sound of it.

“I don’t think it’s good for the soul,” Nighy says. “I want to go to work. The world is crazy, and I want to make things that may even marginally help.”

To that end, he has been genuinely moved by all the people seeing “Living” and sending him messages, telling him that the film prompted them to take care of unfinished business or inspired them to “live a little.” Our conversation returns often to a desire to actively look for beauty in every circumstance. With one friend, Nighy has a catchphrase he’ll sometimes text: “I’m out here. I’m out in the middle of everything.” Meaning, he says, he’s fully present and in “vigorous — and I do mean vigorous — opposition to the tendency to succumb to any kind of negative projection.”

“I used to spend too much time in the past or in an imaginary future,” Nighy says. “And when I project into the future ... guess what? It doesn’t always look that great. But I’m much better now. I’ve defied this tendency. I have this expression I share with a friend — ‘death to superstition.’ Fear of the future is a form of superstition. I find that helpful to remember. I should have a T-shirt with ‘death to superstition’ on it.”

“You don’t get any days off from the static in your head,” he says. “It seems to wait for you at the bottom of the bed. But then you get up, and everything we do — work, raising a family, listening to the rain — is a victory over that.”

He pauses, replaying his words in his head. “I don’t know what this is going to sound like in print. Suddenly, you hear yourself and you think, ‘Oh my God.’ Anyway ... f— it. Excuse my language. I do try not to have a day stolen from me. It’s not easy. But I do believe it’s an idea worth pursuing.”

Bij de BAFTA Television Awards in april 2004 won hij de prijs voor beste acteur voor State of Play. Hij verscheen ook in de komedie Shaun of the Dead.

Begin 2004 meldde The Sunday Times dat Nighy op de shortlist stond voor de rol van de Negende Dokter in de heropleving van de BBC-televisieserie Doctor Who in 2005. Christopher Eccleston vervulde uiteindelijk de rol.

In 2005 verscheen hij als Slartibartfast in de verfilming van The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Hij verscheen ook in het eenmalige BBC One-komediedrama The Girl in the Café. In februari 2006 verscheen hij in het eenmalige drama van scenarioschrijver Stephen Poliakoff, Gideon's Daughter. In 2006 speelde Nighy de belangrijkste slechterik, Davy Jones, in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, waarbij zijn gezicht volledig verborgen was door computergegenereerde make-up. Hij uitte het personage met een Schots accent. Hij hernam de rol in het vervolg uit 2007, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, waarin zijn echte gezicht kort werd onthuld in één scène. Hij verzorgde ook de vertelling voor de Animal Planet-serie Meerkat Manor. In 2006 speelde hij de rol van Richard Hart in Notes on a Scandal, waarvoor hij werd genomineerd voor een London Film Critics' Circle Award. Nighy verscheen ook als generaal Friedrich Olbricht, een van de belangrijkste samenzweerders, in de film Valkyrie uit 2008. Hij had een SS-officier gespeeld in Hitler's SS: Portrait in Evil uit 1985. Hij speelde in 2010 in de film Wild Target.

In juli 2009 kondigde hij aan dat hij Rufus Scrimgeour zou spelen in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1. Nighy had al twee keer met regisseur David Yates samengewerkt, en met het merendeel van de Harry Potter-cast in eerdere films. Hij heeft over zijn rol als Rufus Schobbejak gezegd dat dit betekende dat hij niet langer de enige Engelse acteur was die niet in Harry Potter speelde.

In 2014 speelde hij samen met Carey Mulligan in een heropleving van David Hare's Skylight in Wyndham's Theatre in het Londense West End. Het had een groot internationaal publiek via uitzending in de National Theatre Live-serie. Hij en Mulligan speelden ook een hoofdrol in het stuk toen het in 2015 naar Broadway werd overgebracht, waar ze allebei Tony Award-nominaties ontvingen voor hun optredens. In 2020 verscheen hij als Mr Woodhouse, Emma's vader, in Autumn de Wilde's Emma (2020), met in de hoofdrol naast Anya Taylor-Joy. De film kreeg bijna universele bijval, waarbij Variety-filmcriticus Andrew Barker de casting van Nighy als Emma's vader prees en schreef dat de beslissing een "onbetwiste casting-indeling" was.

In oktober 2020 werd aangekondigd dat Nighy de hoofdrol zou spelen in Living, een Engelstalige bewerking van Akira Kurosawa's Japanse drama Ikiru uit 1952, geregisseerd door Oliver Hermanus naar een scenario van Kazuo Ishiguro. De opnames begonnen in het voorjaar van 2021 op locaties in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, waaronder Londen en Worthing. De film ging in januari 2022 in première op Sundance, waar vooral Nighy's optreden veel lof kreeg.

In de tv-serie The Man Who Fell to Earth uit 2022 speelde Nighy de briljante Thomas Newton, de eerste alien die ruim 40 jaar geleden op aarde arriveerde. Deze rol werd oorspronkelijk gespeeld door David Bowie in de verfilming van 1976.

Nighy is ook de verteller van de Channel 5-reisshow The World's Most Scenic Railway Journeys, een programma dat in de herfst van 2021 aan zijn vijfde serie begon met afleveringen over treinreizen door Australië en de grenzen van Wales.

Radio
Hij speelde Samwise Gamgee in de BBC Radio-dramatisering van The Lord of the Rings uit 1981 (gecrediteerd als William Nighy), en was te horen in de BBC Radio-versie van Yes Minister uit de jaren 80.

Sinds 1999 heeft Nighy Simon Brett's fictieve amateur-speurder Charles Paris minstens 17 keer gespeeld op BBC Radio 4. In 2022 werd Nighy DJ op BBC 6 Music toen hij Guy Garvey verving in het reguliere zondagmiddagprogramma Guy Garvey's Finest Hour, waarbij Nighy begin 2023 opnieuw de frontman van Elbow verving. 36][37] Later verving hij Iggy Pop in zijn show Iggy Confidential van maart tot april 2023.

Priveleven
Vanaf 1982 had Nighy een relatie met de Engelse actrice Diana Quick, toen ze werkten in David Hare's A Map of The World. Ze hebben een dochter, actrice en filmmaker Mary Nighy, geboren in 1984. Het paar ging in 2008 uit elkaar.

Hij heeft de contractuur van Dupuytren, die hij van zijn moeder heeft geërfd. De aandoening kan, afhankelijk van de ernst ervan, contracturen van de vingers veroorzaken, meestal de ringvinger en de pink.

Nighy is een supporter van Crystal Palace FC Hij is beschermheer van de CPSCC (Crystal Palace Children's Charity) en van de Ann Craft Trust. Hij is ook ere-beschermheer van de Londense liefdadigheidsinstelling voor kinderen, Scene & Heard.

Hij is beschermheer van de Milton Rooms, een nieuw kunstcentrum in Malton, North Yorkshire, samen met Imelda Staunton, Jools Holland en Kathy Burke.

Nighy is een voorstander van de belastingcampagne van Robin Hood en speelde in een video ter ondersteuning ervan.

Bekend om zijn steun voor totale gendergelijkheid, merkte Nighy in een interview tijdens het DIFF-filmfestival van 2016 op dat het benadrukken van genderongelijkheidsproblemen in de filmindustrie zijn keuze voor filmrollen had beïnvloed. Hij heeft ook gesproken over zijn rol in Pride, een film waarin de wederzijdse steun tussen de National Union of Miners en homorechtengroepen in Groot-Brittannië in de jaren tachtig werd geprezen, als een van zijn meest gekoesterde films.

Nighy staat bekend om zijn op maat gemaakte marinepakken. Hij werd in maart 2013 door The Guardian vermeld als een van de 50 best geklede vijftigplussers en in 2015 als een van de 50 best geklede Britse mannen van GQ.

Hij werd een fan van de Pokémon-franchise tijdens de productie van Detective Pikachu, waarin hij Howard Clifford speelde. Hij heeft t gezegd

Nighy worstelde jarenlang met substantiekwesties, met name alcoholisme, een onderwerp dat hij zelden bespreekt, en is sinds 17 mei 1992 een "nuchtere alcoholist". In 2003 stopte hij ook met roken.

Toen hij twintig was, zat Nighy in een band genaamd The Love Ponies en nam vervolgens een paar nummers op.

Nighy verblijft momenteel in Pimlico, Londen.

National Theatre
After he made his debut, he steadily gained acclaim with his performances in David Hare's Pravda in 1985, William Shakespeare's King Lear in 1986 and Anton Chekov's The Seagull in 1994. At the National Theatre, he acted in productions alongside Anthony Hopkins, Judi Dench, Harriet Walter, Rufus Sewell and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Nighy's most acclaimed stage performances were in National Theatre productions. As Bernard Nightingale, an unscrupulous university don, in Tom Stoppard's Arcadia (1993), he engaged in witty exchanges with Felicity Kendal, who played Hannah Jarvis, an author.

Independent Theatre
He played Jerry in Harold Pinter's Betrayal in 1991 at the Almeida Theatre. He played a consultant psychiatrist in Joe Penhall's Blue/Orange (2000), for which he received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor. It transferred to the West End at the Duchess Theatre the following year. In 1997, Nighy starred as restaurant entrepreneur Tom Sergeant in David Hare's Skylight, which had premiered in 1995 and was moved to the Vaudeville Theatre.[13][14]

Film and television
Nighy starred in three episodes of the British anthology series Play For Today from 1978 to 1982. He played a libidinous young disc jockey, Vincent Fish, in the 1980 comedy series Agony, where he was the occasional lover of the lead character, played by Maureen Lipman. He also starred in two episodes of the BBC series Performance in 1991 and 1993.

One of Nighy's early major screen appearances was the BBC serial The Men's Room (1991). He claimed that the serial, an Ann Oakley novel adapted by Laura Lamson, was the job that launched his career.[15]

He received some recognition by American audiences for his acclaimed portrayal of overaged rock star Ray Simms in the 1998 film Still Crazy. In 1999 he gained further prominence in the UK with the starring role in "The Photographer," an episode of the award-winning BBC-TV mockumentary comedy series People Like Us, playing Will Rushmore, a middle aged man who has abandoned his career and family in the deluded belief that he can achieve success as a commercial photographer.

In 2003, Nighy played the role of the Vampire Elder Viktor in the American production Underworld. He returned in the same role in the sequel Underworld: Evolution in 2006, and again in the prequel Underworld: Rise of the Lycans in 2009. In February 2004, he was awarded the BAFTA Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Billy Mack in Love Actually. At the BAFTA Television Awards in April 2004, he won the Best Actor award for State of Play. He also appeared in the comedy Shaun of the Dead.

In early 2004, The Sunday Times reported that Nighy was on the shortlist for the role of the Ninth Doctor in the 2005 revival of the BBC television series Doctor Who.[16] Christopher Eccleston ultimately filled the role.

In 2005, he appeared as Slartibartfast in the film adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He also appeared in the one-off BBC One comedy-drama The Girl in the Café. In February 2006, he appeared in scriptwriter Stephen Poliakoff's one-off drama, Gideon's Daughter. Nighy played the lead character, Gideon, a successful events organiser who begins to lose touch with the world around him. This performance won him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Mini-series or TV Film in January 2007. Also in 2006, Nighy made his Broadway debut at the Music Box Theatre alongside Julianne Moore in The Vertical Hour, directed by Sam Mendes.

In 2006, Nighy played the principal villain, Davy Jones, in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest with his face entirely obscured by computer-generated makeup. He voiced the character with a Scots accent. He reprised the role in the 2007 sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, in which his real face was briefly revealed in one scene. He also provided the narration for the Animal Planet series Meerkat Manor. In 2006 he played the role of Richard Hart in Notes on a Scandal, for which he was nominated for a London Film Critics' Circle award. Nighy also appeared as General Friedrich Olbricht, one of the principal conspirators, in the 2008 film Valkyrie. He had played an SS officer in the 1985 Hitler's SS: Portrait in Evil. In July 2009, he announced that he would play Rufus Scrimgeour in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.[18] Nighy had already worked with director David Yates twice, and with the majority of the Harry Potter cast in previous films. He has said of his role as Rufus Scrimgeour that it meant he was no longer the only English actor not to be in Harry Potter.[18]

In October 2020, it was announced that Nighy would play the leading role in Living, an English-language adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1952 Japanese drama Ikiru, to be directed by Oliver Hermanus from a screenplay by Kazuo Ishiguro.[27] Shooting began in spring 2021 in locations across the UK, including London and Worthing. The film premiered at Sundance in January 2022, where Nighy's performance in particular received high praise.[28]

In the 2022 TV series The Man Who Fell to Earth Nighy played the brilliant Thomas Newton, the first alien to arrive on earth over 40 years ago. This role originally was played by David Bowie in the 1976 film adaptation.[29]

Nighy is also the narrator of the Channel 5 travel show The World's Most Scenic Railway Journeys,[30] a programme which started its fifth series in Autumn 2021 with episodes featuring train journeys across Australia and the Welsh borders.[31][32]

Radio

Since 1999, Nighy has played Simon Brett's fictional amateur sleuth Charles Paris at least 17 times on BBC Radio 4.[33] In 2022, Nighy became a DJ on BBC 6 Music when he stood in for Guy Garvey on the regular Sunday afternoon programme Guy Garvey's Finest Hour, with Nighy deputising for the Elbow frontman again at the beginning of 2023.[34][35][36][37] He later deputised for Iggy Pop on his show Iggy Confidential from March to April 2023.[38][39][40]

Personal life
Beginning in 1982, Nighy was in a relationship with English actress Diana Quick, when they worked in David Hare’s A Map of The World. They have a daughter, actress and filmmaker Mary Nighy, born in 1984. The pair separated in 2008.

He has Dupuytren's contracture,[41] which he inherited from his mother. The condition can, depending on its severity, cause contractures of the fingers, most commonly the ring and little fingers.[42]

Nighy is a supporter of Crystal Palace F.C. He is a Patron of the CPSCC (Crystal Palace Children's Charity)[43] and of the Ann Craft Trust.[44] He is also an Honorary Patron of the London children's charity Scene & Heard.[45]

He is a patron of the Milton Rooms, a new arts centre in Malton, North Yorkshire, along with Imelda Staunton, Jools Holland and Kathy Burke.[46]

Nighy is a supporter of the Robin Hood tax campaign and starred in a video in support of it.[47][48][49]

Known for his support of total gender equality, Nighy noted in an interview during the 2016 DIFF film festival that the highlighting of gender inequality problems in the film industry had influenced his choice of film roles.[50] He has also spoken of his role in Pride, a film extolling the mutual support between the National Union of Miners and gay rights groups in the UK in the 1980s, as one of his most cherished.[51]

Nighy is noted for his bespoke navy suits.[52] He was listed as one of the 50 best-dressed over-50s by The Guardian in March 2013[53] and one of GQ's 50 best-dressed British men in 2015.[54]

He became a fan of the Pokémon franchise during the production of Detective Pikachu, in which he played Howard Clifford. He has said that Mew is his favourite Pokémon.[55]

For many years, Nighy struggled with substance issues, particularly alcoholism, a topic he rarely discusses, and has been a "sober alcoholic" since 17 May 1992.[56] He also gave up smoking in 2003.[57]

During his twenties, Nighy was in a band called The Love Ponies and subsequently recorded a few songs.[58][59]

Nighy currently resides in Pimlico, London.[60]
